Barbara Stanwyck stars in this Christmas classic dating all the
way back to 1945. In those days there was much need for positivity
after the tough years of the war that had just passed, and
celebrating Christmas with Stanwyck winking naughtily was the
perfect medicine. Most known for her film of the same year, the
ground-breaking Double Indemnity, Stanwyck really is on top form,
showing how she deserved the four Academy nominations for an
Actress in a leading role throughout her career (as well as many,
many others).
Stanwyck plays the lead role of Elizabeth Lane, a food critic who
in fact knows very little about being the perfect housewife. She
lives a single life in New York City, while claiming to be a
hard-working farm woman, and she can't even boil an egg! This
Christmas, she must cover up her little white lies, as her boss and
a returning war hero, who of course becomes Lane's love interest,
show up for Christmas dinner.
This World War II hero, Jefferson Jones, who is played by Dennis
Morgan, has been tangled in some complications of his own, and
there are quite a few deceptions to sort out before there is any
chance that Christmas can continue unscathed. Also, somehow along
the way there even feature two babies on the scene at "Lane's"
farm, which adds a whole other dilemma to the already complicated
mix.
There was a remake of Christmas in Connecticut in 1992, with none
other than Arnold Schwarzenegger directing the piece. However, this
version was less than well-received, despite having Dyan Cannon and
Kris Kristofferson in the lead roles. Perhaps it was beyond the
main pull of the stars' reach to make the version work.
It can be a difficult classic to find even at Christmas on the
myriad of television stations we have these days. It's such a shame
that there's always another station, but golden oldies like this
aren't getting aired. But if you get a chance to see Christmas in
Connecticut this winter season, be sure to reap the rewards and
enjoy the stunning and one of a kind starlet Stanwyck while you
have the opportunity.
Fun Fact:
Stanwyck's character, Elizabeth Lane, was loosely based on the
then popular Family Circle Magazine columnist Gladys Taber, who
lived on Stillmeadow Farm in Connecticut.
